Chinese Herbal Medicine
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese Herbal Medicine uses herbs to treat illness and maintain health.
It has been practised for thousands of years, originating in China and then throughout the whole world.
How does Chinese Herbal Medicine work?
Chinese Herbal Medicine is based on the concepts of Yin and Yang (the balance of life). It aims to understand and treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between the two may be undermined and the ways in which a person's Qi (body energy) may be depleted or blocked.
In China, more than 3,200 herbs plus 300 mineral and animal extracts are used in over 400 different formulas. Herbal formulas may contain between 4 and 12 different ingredients. One or two of the herbs are the ones that have the greatest effect on the problem to be treated, the other ingredients act on treating minor aspects of the problem and to help the main ingredients work better. The remedies are taken in the form of teas, tinctures, powders, pills or syrups.
