Bach Flower Remedies

What are Bach Flower Remedies?

Bach Flower Remedies are essences derived from plants and flowers.

Bach Flower Remedies were created in the 1930s by Edward Bach, a Harley Street doctor. His philosophy was, "A healthy mind ensures a healthy body"; a very modern idea that is common today but quiet a revolutionary concept in the 1930s.

Dr. Bach devised a system of seven major emotional groups under which people could be classified, such as Fear, Uncertainty or Loneliness. He categorised 38 negative states of mind under these groups. Then using his knowledge of homoeopathy, Dr. Bach formulated a plant or flower based remedy to treat each of these emotional states; these are the unique Bach Flower Remedies.

Dr Bach lived in Mount Vernon, Oxfordshire, where he discovered the healing flowers in the surrounding fields and hedgerows.

Today the place is called the Dr Edward Bach Centre and the same flower locations are still used in the preparation of the remedies using the same methods as Dr Bach. It is also the education and training centre for the use of Bach Flower Remedies.

How do Bach Flower Remedies work?

Bach Flower Remedies are homeopathic dilutions of flower or plant material.

Bach Flower Remedies work by stimulating the body's own natural ability to heal itself, helping the client to take control and balancing negative feelings.

Dr Bach categorised the remedies under a system using seven major emotional groups. Using his knowledge of homoepathy, he formulated a remedy to treat each of these specific emotional states. Each of the remedies treat a specific aspect of the emotional group that it has been categorised in.

What does Bach Flower Remedies treatment involve?

A session normally lasts about 1 hour. Follow up sessions are usually the same length.

After taking medical details, the therapist will listen to the problems the client has and find out how they are feeling about life issues. This is a very important stage of the consultation as it will help the therapist prescribe the correct remedy.

When the notes have been taken and assessed, the therapist will prepare a specific mix of the remedies, depending on the client's needs. This mix can be up to 7 remedies but is usually a combination of 2 or 4. The remedies are taken with water, the frequency will depend on the treatment needed but they are usually taken at least once or twice a day. Progress is usually reviewed weekly and the remedies given may be adjusted according to the situation.
