What is Ayurvedic Medicine?
Ayurvedic medicine is a holisitc healthcare treatment that originated in India and incorporates diet, detoxification, exercise, the use of herbs plus techniques to improve and maintain both emotional and mental health plus prevent illness and disease.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning Life (Ayur) and Knowledge (Veda).
Ayurvedic medicine is said to have been handed down to man from the Hindu gods; there is written evidence of Ayurvedic medicine dating back 3,500 years.
How does Ayurvedic Medicine work?
The key to using and understanding Ayurvedic medicine, is to determine a person's individual constitution and how their energies relate to it.
By using this knowledge Ayurveda's aim is to prevent disease by working with the person's body rather than trying to create change.
Each person has a unique constitution which is determined by the balance of the three doshas (vital energies) in the body. The names of these doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person has all three doshas present in their constitution but will be governed by one dominant dosha or a combination of two doshas. These types are vata, pitta, kapha, vata/pitta, vata/kapha and pitta/kapha.
When all three doshas are in balance the body is healthy.
The vata dosha relates to the nervous system and the body's energy.
The pitta dosha relates to digestion and metabolism.
The kapha dosha relates to the liquid systems in the body.
Imbalances in the doshas produce toxins which in turn cause illness, food allergies, cravings and negative emotions.
