What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils in holistic treatments to improve physical well being.
Aromatherapy has been used for many centuries, at least as far back as the Egyptians.
Modern Aromatherapy developed in the early part of the 20th century, when Rene Maurice Gattefoss, a French chemist, burned himself and discovered by accident that pure lavender oil could prevent scarring and infection.
How does Aromatherapy work?
Essential oils are used in Aromatherapy. There are over 300 essential oils in use today. These are oils extracted from trees, shrubs, herbs and flowers; and each own has it's own specific therapeutic properties. The skill of the Aromatherapist is used to select the specific essential oil that will improve the health of the patient.
The essential oil is combined with a carrier oil (often almond oil) before application. This is for two reasons: many of the essential oils are too strong to apply to the skin undiluted and the carrier oil helps the skin to "carry" the oil into the body and thus helping the treatment.
Sometimes a single oil is used for therapy and sometimes a combination of oils are used, depending on the individual.
Essential oils can be used in massage, inhalations and in the bath.
What does Aromatherapy treatment involve?
An Aromatherapy session will normally last for an hour to an hour and a half.
After taking medical details and general lifestyle information, the aromatherapist will select and blend the appropriate essential oils. They will then apply the oils in a combination of massage tecniques.
