What is Psychoneuroimmunology
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is the study of the interaction between the psychological processes and the immune and nervous systems of the human body. The term Psychoneuroimmunolgy was first used by Dr Robert Ader in 1975 to express his belief that there is a link between the way that people think and their overall health.
An underperforming nervous system and ineffective stress reactions will leave a person vulnerable to infections, viruses and bacteria.
How does Psychoneuroimmunology work?
Psychoneuroimmunology works by understanding the processes between the psychological process, the immune and the nervous systems. There is a connection between strong emotions like anger, fear and rage, and the strength of the immune system. When extreme emotions are not expressed properly, the body builds up an excess of epinephrine, the stress secretion. Epinephrine causes a chemical breakdown that results in a weakened immune system and susceptibility to disease.
What does Psychoneuroimmunology treatment involve?
The use of Psychoneuroimmunology is relatively new. It it used by many therapists in their work including:
Guided Imagery or Visualisation - a process that involves the use of symbols to imagine the changes the individual desires takes place.
Biofeedback - coined in the late 1960s to describe laboratory procedures used to train experimental research subjects to alter brain activity, blood pressure, heart rate, and other bodily functions that are not normally controlled voluntarily.
Hypnotherapy - a system that uses an induced trance state to facilitate healing.
The length and number of sessions required depends on the therapy used, the individual and the problem to be resolved.
What can Psychoneuroimmunology help?
General health and well being, stress, anxiety, reduce risk of infection, promotes confidence and raises low self-esteem.
