What is Neurotherapy
Neurotherapy (EEG biofeedback or Neurofeedback) is a way to retrain brainwave patterns to help re-balance behaviour.
In the late 1960's and 1970's it became possible to recondition and retrain brainwave patterns. It began with the training of alpha brainwave activity to aid relaxation plus work on uncontrolled epilepsy.
How does Neurotherapy work?
The brainwaves of the client are recorded. This output is analysed and the client then repeats certain activites while viewing their brainwave activity to learn to retrain the activity, in effect changing the automatic brainwave patterns that they are displaying for particular activities.
What does Neurotherapy treatment involve?
The initial treatment lasts about 90 minutes.
After taking medical details, the therapists will attach a cap fitted with electrodes to the client's head to monitor brainwave activity. During this time the client should be in a restful, relaxed state so that the brainwave activity can be recorded on a computer for analysis later.
After this initial assessment, treatment goals are agreed on and two electrodes are placed on the scalp and one or two on the earlobes for the next stage of the process: the neurotherapy training sessions.
The brainwave activity is then observed on the screen by both the therapist and the client. By carrying out an activity, the client can observe feedback and modify certain traits of their behaviour in order to alter the brainwave patterns. This process is like physical exercise for the brain.
Usually 25 sessions are needed, sometimes as many as 50 are required. The follow up sessions will usually be about 40 minutes.
What can Neurotherapy help?
ADD, ADHD, learning difficulties, epilepsy, brain injuries, stroke problems, alcohol and drug abuse, and post traumatic stress disorder.
