What is Life Coaching
Life Coaching is a relatively new therapy. It is a talking therapy that was developed in the 1980s in America. It is based on the techniques uses in sociology, counselling and psychology, plus the work of Sigmund Freud.
It started as a method used in business for training programmes. In 1989 Stephen Covey published a book explaining the seven habits needed for an effective life. Other pioneers in the Life Coaching area are Thomas Leonard and Laura Whitworth who set up coaching schools in the 1990s, and developed the philosophy and methods of Life Coaching.
Life Coaching was first used in the UK in the 1990s.
How does Life Coaching work?
The Life Coach will use various different methods to help the client achieve both personal and professional life goals. Positive attitudes to life are encouraged, plus a clear direction path of how to achieve their life's objectives is discussed.
Sometimes a Life Coach will use Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).
What does Life Coaching treatment involve?
The first appointment can last from under an hour to up to 3 hours. Subsequent appointments are usually about an hour. About six sessions are needed but the exact number will depend on the individual and the nature of the situtation.
Initially the Life Coach will take the clients details, medical and problem areas, then they will discuss personal attitudes to life, empowering them to set and achieve goals.
What can Life Coaching help?
Increase confidence, help with relationship issues and improve time management.
